Trash to Gold!!!

When it comes to environmental awareness and waste management, Sweden is one of the world's champions. The country recycles nearly all of its waste and - in the process - generates electricity and heating. Sweden has turn Her  waste to gold, Sweden produces 4.4 million tonnes of waste per year and just 1% is dumped in landfills. The are far ahead of other countries in the business of recycling.

And How do they do it you might ask?
Sweden has developed a unique culture of recycling thereby turning their dumpsters into treasure troves. They have opened several stores that when seen from the outside looks no different from a normal mall but infact sells only recycled items ranging from glass cups, furniture, books and laptops. They also supply rubbish bags free of charge and employ Her citizens to carefully sort out their trash. So there is a bag for organic waste, a bag for plastic waste, a bag for paper, and one for metal cans.

A recycling center with seven recycling vents was opened in every district and consumers  make a trip to them an average of twice a week. Swedish people bring in about 480kg of waste per person in a year. Half of it; metal, plastic and glass go directly to recycling. The other half also gets a second life, anything that cannot be recycled is transported to power generation plants.

These waste are dumped into large incinerators that convert them into energy (Heat and Electric). A thousand people get heat this way and two thousand people benefit from the electricity generated. The system is working so well that Sweden manages waste from other countries. At 2016, Sweden imported 1.4 million tonnes of waste and those countries  paid 36 euro per tonnes and thereby bringing in more than 50 million.

In Sweden, they see waste as a commodity a product one can sell or buy, They hope to go further to reuse 100% of waste generated within 3 years and have no landfill site at all.
